The coin depicts the Treaty signed by the six founding countries against a background reminiscent of the paving (designed by Michelangelo) of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, where the signing took place on March 25, 1957. “Treaty of Rome 50th Anniversary”, “EUROPE” and the name of the issuing country are indicated in the relevant Eurozone languages or in Latin.
So the legend differs from country to country, but the image is the same. The Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community and eventually led to the introduction of the euro in 1999 and euro banknotes and coins in 2002. The anniversary was celebrated on March 25, 2007. The eurozone countries celebrated this event by jointly issuing this commemorative coin. Its design was chosen following a competition organized by European mints. The outer ring of the coin features the 12 stars of the European Union.
